Missy Higgins will take part in an upcoming concert to promote the release of ‘The Best Is Yet To Come: The Songs Of Cy Coleman’.

In New York City on October 28th Missy will join an all-star lineup of female singers including Madeleine Peyroux, Patty Griffin, Julianna Raye, Perla Batalla, Ambrosia Parsley and others to perform songs from the Cy Coleman- the influential Grammy, Emmy & Tony award winning songwriter and musician.

Missy’s version of “(I’m) In Love Again” can be found on this special tribute album.

Coleman was the last major contributor to the Great American Songbook. He’s responsible for timeless songs such as “Witchcraft,” “The Best Is Yet To Come,” “Big Spender” and “The Rules Of The Road” made timeless by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Barbara Streisand, Dusty Springfield, Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee.

Bran Nue Dae, the film starring Geoffrey Rush and featuring Missy Higgins won the Melbourne International Film Festival’s “Audience Award” for Best Film!

And it was just announced that the film will now be shown at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival!

Missy Higgins was on hand at the beautiful Forum Theatre in Melbourne last night to induct Kev Carmody into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

In her speech Missy described Kev as “an inspiration, a true pioneer and a wonderful man”.

Missy also performed as part of a supergroup that featured John Butler, Dan Kelly, Kutcha & Natalie Pa’apa’a in tribute to Kev Carmody.

The ARIA hall of fame ceremony will be broadcast on VH1 on Friday, August 28 at 8.30pm and repeated on the Nine Network nationally on Saturday, August 29 at 2pm.

A new tribute album “The Best Is Yet To Come: The Songs of Cy Coleman” will be released on September 18. The album features Missy’s version of the classic song “(I’m) In Love Again”.

Other artists on the album include Fiona Apple, Patty Griffin, Nikka Costa, Sara Watkins and more.

Missy was recently cast alongside Geoffrey Rush & Ernie Dingo in the film BRAN NEW DAE which has been adapted for screen by director Rachel Perkins.

The film is based on writer Jimmy Chi’s life in Broome and features lots of musical elements from the original stage show.

This Sunday the 21st June 2009, 60 Minutes will feature a story on the threats to the Kimberley from heavy industry. This show will be yet another step in bringing awareness to the general public of the problem facing one of the world’s last great wilderness areas. Be sure to be watching and to tell your friends.

Missy Higgins will be joining a stellar line-up of musicians who will be paying tribute to Queensland troubadour, Kev Carmody for the Queensland Music Festival event ‘Cannot Buy My Soul’.

The event, held on Saturday 1st August at Brisbane’s Riverstage will see Missy along with many others including Paul Kelly, Bernard Fanning, John Butler and Glenn Richards perform live the songs from the Kev Carmody tribute album ‘Cannot Buy My Soul’.

Just wanted to share with you all two films that I’ve seen lately that have blown me away, both that touch on Indigenous Australian issues in a REALLY different way. The first is a documentary called Bastardy that I saw at the Melbourne Film Fest which follows an beautifully charismatic man called Jack Charles (those of you also from Melbourne will probably recognise him from the streets of Fitzroy) into the mansions he cat-burgles (so nonchalantly!), in and out of jail on a regular basis, through to the other side of a heroin addiction and so much more- it’s filmed over 7 years. Oh and he’s also an ex-theatre and television star which makes for really interesting archival footage that’s woven throughout the film. Check out more about it here and I really recommend going to see it if you can. It’s showing for a short while at the Palace Cinemas around Australia from June 25th… And the other is a doco called Old Country New Country which aired on SBS earlier this month… it is about the industrialisation of Traditional Aboriginal land, shown from the perspective of a Aboriginal Elder and his nephew, Albert Wiggan (who for those of you that came to my concert at the Byron Blues Fest, spoke and read a poem on stage during my show). A lot of you have probably read or heard about the proposed gas hub for the west coast of Australia up in the Kimberley region. And you may have seen that I’ve been fighting hard along-side my friends from up there (many of which are Aboriginal men and women that grew up on that land and are heart-broken to see it in danger) against this proposal. Just briefly, what we are asking the WA government for is for them to pipe the gas down the coast where there are mining towns already set up (and culturally destroyed as a result) instead of ruining the pristine Kimberley coast by bringing it on-shore there. Keep the gas, just leave the Kimberleys alone. So this doco was relevant and interesting because it comes at this issue from a different angle, through the eyes of an Elder who is seeing an industrial site for the first time. His wisdom and insight is beautiful and rare. If you missed it on tv and you wanna see it you can order the DVDs here and try to find out more about the issue of this proposed gas hub, it is a complicated issue but one we should all know about I think, as it represents something so much bigger. Both films are something different, something to get you thinking, and inspired, which is always a good thing! Enjoy. I’m off to try and finish a song that needs a bridge!
